Desktop Download Instructions for Second Installation

Installation requires Windows 10 or later.

  • Click “Install thinkorswim” (64-bit) –
  • Select your preferred language and then the thinkorswim Set Up Wizard will appear. Click “Next”

  • Update Installation –select “Install another instance of thinkorswim into a different directory”. Click “Next”

  • Account with –select “TD Ameritrade” then click “Next”

  • License Agreement –select “I acknowledge, continue with installation” then click “Next”

  • Select Installation Options –select “Install for all users of this machine (requires administrative rights)” then click “Next”

  • Select Destination Directory – in the destination directory field, add the number 1 (or any number) to the end of the destination directory and then click “Next”

  • Select Integration Options –select “Create desktop icon” then click “Next”

Click “Done” and the installation process is complete. A second thinkorswim icon should appear on your desktop. Right click and rename the icon.

You should then follow the instructions above for Switching for thinkorswim desktop and set the second version to thinkorswim Schwab or thinkorswim TD Ameritrade as desired.

Mac users

Installation requires OS X 10.11 or later. You can check which version you are running by clicking on the Apple Menu and selecting “About this Mac.”

  • Click “install thinkorswim” to download the thinkorswim installer. Once downloaded, open the .dmg file to start the application installation.
  • Note: Depending on security setting, you may be presented with dialogues asking for permission to continue. In this case, you will need to confirm that you want to proceed with the installation.
  • Select your preferred language and then the thinkorswim Set Up Wizard will appear. Click “Next”

  • Update Installation –select “Install another instance of thinkorswim into a different directory”. Click “Next”

  • Account with –select “TD Ameritrade” then click “Next”

  • License Agreement –select “I acknowledge, continue with installation” then click “Next”

  • Select Installation Options –select “Install for all users of this machine (requires administrative rights)” then click “Next”

  • Select Destination Directory – in the destination directory field, add the number 1 (or any number) to the end of the destination directory and then click “Next”

  • Select Integration Options –select “Create desktop icon” then click “Next”

Once complete you will have an icon labelled thinkorswim that displays the thinkorswim logo on your desktop. Right click and rename the icon.

You should then follow the instructions above for Switching for thinkorswim desktop and set the second version to thinkorswim Schwab or thinkorswim TD Ameritrade as desired.

Instructions for copying thinkorswim desktop settings

Windows

  • On the login screen for the second installation, open the settings menu by clicking on the gear icon in the bottom left corner.
  • In the bottom left corner of the Settings screen, click on the clock icon. Select “Choose folder” from the menu that appears.
  • In the browser window that opens, navigate to the thinkorswim installation folder. By default, the path to it is “Windows (C:)/Program Files/thinkorswim”. If you have installed thinkorswim originally to a non-default location, consider using the system search to find it.
  • Select the thinkorswim folder and click OK. The Settings screen will reappear.
  • Click Save.
  • Proceed with logging in to thinkorswim. Once you log in, your previous workspaces should be available.

Mac

  • On the login screen for the second installation, open the settings menu by clicking on the gear icon in the bottom left corner.
  • In the bottom left corner of the Settings screen, click on the clock icon. Select “Choose folder” from the menu that appears.
  • In the browser window that opens, navigate to the thinkorswim installation folder. By default, the older installation should be located under the applications tab. If you have installed thinkorswim originally to a non-default location, consider using the system search to find it via the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the finder window that appears.
  • Select the thinkorswim folder and click Open. The Settings screen will reappear.
  • Click Save.
  • Proceed with logging in to thinkorswim. Once you log in, your previous workspaces should be available.
